ms Zuiderdam I (1939-1941)
Delft Blue Ceramic Tile from Holland America Cruises, commemorating the ms Zuiderdam I. The front of the tile shows the likeness of the ill-fated first Zuiderdam ship, and the dates 1939 - 1941. The back is corked. A lovely piece of ocean liner memorabilia.
Size: Approximately 4" x 4"

NOTE: This tile merely commemorates the ship that sank in 1941. It is not from that ship.
Although this Zuiderdam never hosted a passenger for HAL, she has an interesting history. The ms Zuiderdam I was begun in 1939, and launched from the Rotterdam shipyard for outfitting in 1941. Just a month later, she was damaged and capsized during a British air raid. The Germans raised the hull and later sunk her again to block the port of Rotterdam. After the war, she was raised again, was never completed.
Her namesake, the Zuiderdam II, launched in 2001, sails for Holland America, and is the first of their Vista Class ships.
